BT Redcare alarm monitoring shut down
Keep your property insurance valid with alternatives.
Earlier this year, BT announced it would be switching off its ‘Redcare’ alarm monitoring system on 1st August 2025.
To confirm for anyone who’s worried that’s a typo, we didn’t mean 2024. It’s definitely switching off next year. So that means there’s time to find an alternative provider in the meantime.
Thousands of businesses currently use the Redcare system, and will now need to find a new way of remotely monitoring their fire and intruder alarm services.
Redcare provides 24/7/365 monitoring by connecting to professionally installed alarm systems – meaning it automatically notifies local police and fire services if an alarm is activated in a monitored property.
The system runs on BT’s ageing copper cable network, which is being closed down after more than 30 years.
What this means in insurance terms is you’ll need to find another provider, and preferably sooner rather than later. There’s a chance that the expected surge in demand will lead to shortages of new systems as well as lengthy lead times for installation.
If you don’t sort out an alternative in time, your insurer would consider it non-compliance with your security and reasonable care conditions. In other words, they’d be unlikely to pay out after a claim.
Before you commit, speak to your broker and insurer to check any new system meets your policy requirements. BT has launched a replacement service called BT Secure 2. However, we’re not convinced this will offer a smooth switchover since it works on different technology infrastructure.
Here are some alternatives you might want to consider – these have different specs so please let us know if you’d like more detail on any of them:
